- [r] The twelfth consonant and second of the இடையினம் or medium class. It is not grammatically an initial. When ani mated by அ, ஆ; இ, ஈ; எ, ஏ; generally, இ is prefixed--as in இரணம், இராகம், இரிஷி, இரீதி, இரெப்பம், இரேகை; sometimes, அ may pre cede ர-as அரங்கம், அரத்தம், அரம்பை, &c.; and if it is animated by உ, ஊ; ஒ, ஓ; the vowel உ is the proper prefix--as உருசி, உரூபம், உரொட்டி, உரோமம்,--For most words therefore beginning with this letter, see under இ or உ. As foreign terms take their natural pronunciation, both in com mon conversation and in writing, without the prefix, some are here given.
